Already Doing It is a UK platform that connects sixth form students with vetted university students and graduates for honest 1:1 video sessions before they choose their degree. This post explains exactly how it works, step by step.

Step 1: Search by subject and university

Visit alreadydoingit.co.uk and use the search tool to find mentors studying your chosen subject at the universities you are considering. You can search by subject alone, by university alone or by both together. The platform covers over 300 subject and university combinations across every major UK university.

Step 2: Browse mentor profiles

Each mentor has a detailed profile including their subject, university, year of study and a personal bio written in their own words. Profiles are honest and specific — mentors are encouraged to share genuine information about their experience rather than a polished sales pitch. Take time to read the profiles and choose the mentor who feels most relevant to your specific questions and interests.

Step 3: Book your session

Booking is straightforward and takes less than five minutes. Select your preferred mentor, choose a time that works for both of you and complete the booking. Sessions cost £30 and take place via Google Meet — there is no app to download and no account to create.

Step 4: Complete the pre-session reflection

Before your session you will receive a short pre-session reflection form. This takes about five minutes to complete and helps you clarify what you most want to get from the conversation. It also helps your mentor prepare to give you the most relevant and useful answers.

Step 5: Have your session

Your 30-minute session takes place via Google Meet at the agreed time. The session is student-led — you bring your questions and guide the conversation. Your mentor is there to answer honestly, share what they genuinely wish they’d known and give you the real picture of what your chosen course and university is actually like.

Step 6: Complete the post-session reflection

After your session you will receive a short post-session reflection form. Your responses contribute to the evidence base that helps schools and parents understand the impact of peer mentoring on university decision making.

Safeguarding

All Already Doing It mentors are identity verified and have completed safeguarding training. Sessions for students under 18 require a parent or guardian to be present at the start of the session. Already Doing It’s full safeguarding policy is available at alreadydoingit.co.uk/safeguarding-policy.

For schools

Already Doing It currenly works with schools across Warwickshire and the West Midlands to deliver free pilots for sixth form cohorts. School pilots include 10 fully funded sessions, full safeguarding oversight, pre and post session surveys and a complete Impact Report formatted for Gatsby Benchmark evidence.
